Synopsis: In the rapidly industrializing city of Łódź at the close of the 19th century, three young men from different worlds form an unlikely alliance to build their own textile empire: Karol Borowiecki, a driven Polish aristocrat working as an engineer, Max Baum, a German whose family owns a fading handloom factory, Moritz Welt, an ambitious Jewish entrepreneur. Their plan is simple but ruthless: pool their resources, take every opportunity, and rise above the brutal competition of the textile industry. A secret tip from Karol’s lover — the wife of a powerful industrialist — allows them to make a fortune on the cotton market and finally finance the factory of their dreams. Just as their new plant is about to open, the jealous husband discovers the affair. In retaliation, he has the factory burned to the ground. The three partners lose everything overnight. Years later, Karol has clawed his way back to wealth by marrying into a rich German family. Now a powerful factory owner himself, he stands face to face with striking workers and must choose whether to crush them or face the consequences of the system he helped create.
The film is a fierce, unflinching portrait of early capitalism, ambition, and the human cost of success.

Synopsis: Ashes and Diamonds is Andrzej Wajda’s most celebrated reflection on the tragic birth of post-war Poland. Set on a single day — 8 May 1945, the official end of World War II in Europe — the film captures a nation that has just been liberated from one occupation only to face another. At its center stands Maciek Chełmicki, the iconic young Home Army fighter played by Zbigniew Cybulski. He is neither a pure hero nor a simple assassin. Tired of killing, momentarily seduced by the possibility of ordinary happiness with the barmaid Krystyna, he is nevertheless bound by loyalty to a cause that history has already begun to abandon. His final act — the murder of the communist official Szczuka — is carried out almost mechanically, while fireworks celebrating peace explode in the sky. The juxtaposition is one of the most famous images in Polish cinema: private tragedy unfolding against official rejoicing.

Synopsis: In 1976, ambitious young film student Agnieszka is determined to make her diploma film about Mateusz Birkut, a bricklayer who became a national hero in the early 1950s. During the construction of the new socialist city of Nowa Huta, Birkut and his team set extraordinary bricklaying records and were turned into a propaganda icon — complete with newsreels, statues, and official celebrations. As Agnieszka digs deeper, interviewing people who knew him and uncovering suppressed archival footage, she discovers the darker truth. Birkut was a genuine idealist who believed in the workers’ cause. After an accident permanently damaged his hands and he defended a colleague falsely accused of sabotage, he fell out of favour with the authorities, was imprisoned, and gradually erased from official history. Agnieszka’s investigation increasingly unsettles the Party officials who control film production. They try to stop her project, but she continues. Eventually she tracks down Birkut’s son, Maciej, a young worker at the Gdańsk Shipyard.

Synopsis: Man of Iron, the sequel to Wajda’s earlier film Man of Marble, is set in August 1980 during the historic strike at the Gdańsk Shipyard that led to the birth of the Solidarity movement. Maciek Tomczyk, son of the working-class hero of Man of Marble, becomes one of the leaders of the strike. Communist authorities send a cynical, alcoholic radio journalist named Winkel to Gdańsk. His assignment is to dig up compromising information on Tomczyk and discredit the strikers. As Winkel investigates, he interviews people close to Tomczyk, including his wife Agnieszka, who has been arrested for supporting the strike. Through their accounts and a series of flashbacks, the film reveals the family’s history and the political events of 1968, 1970, and 1976. Gradually, Winkel undergoes a moral transformation.
